A number of recently announced Acer mini-notebooks recently started shipping in the US. A few more are now available for pre-order. Here’s a quick rundown:

For decades, chip makers were racing to develop the fastest, most powerful chips possible. While that race is still underway, it just doesn’t feel as important as it once did — since a relatively sluggish Intel or AMD processor is still plenty fast enough to handle most computing tasks such as web surfing, editing documents, and playing or even editing multimedia projects. But there’s another race going on as chip-makers try to push out energy efficient chips that provide a decent user experience while prolonging laptop battery life. I like where this is going.

We already knew that Intel had a new line of ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) chips planned. Now Engadget has published a leaked product roadmap which shows that Intel is going all out on the ULV front, with a number of chips for ultrathin notebooks.

That includes a few new Core i5 and i7 chips which should be available later this year which will use about 15W of power for both the CPU and graphics processor. These chips are designed to balance performance and voltage. And next year Intel will launch its Huron River platform with “low voltage” and “ultra low voltage” chips that will bundle Bluetooth, WiMAX, and wireless display capabilities onto the 32nm chipset.

At first glance, the Spring Design Alex eBook Reader looks an awful lot like the Barnes & Noble Nook. Like the Nook it has an e-Ink display for reading books and a color display for browsing your library and performing other tasks. And like the Nook, the Alex is powered by Google’s Android operating system, which theoretically means it can run third party apps — if any were readily available for the platform.

Now it looks like the similarities might go a bit further. The other day I pointed out that the Nook was moving a bit closer to the tablet PC space thanks to the addition of a web browser and some new apps (Soduku and Chess). But the Alex might have just leapfrogged over the Nook in the ability-to-function-like-a-computer department. Because one intrepid hacker figured out how to root the Android operating system on the Alex.

Rooting an Android device is basically the same as jailbreaking an iPhone. It gives you root access to the operating system, meaning you can access settings that would normally be closed off and run unofficial code.

I’m not sure how useful this achievement will be… even if you get to the point where you can install third party apps from the Android Market, it’s not clear how well they’ll run on this unusual device — and it’s a safe bet that most won’t take advantage of the e-Ink display. But perhaps we’ll start to see some custom apps designed for hacked versions of the eBook reader in the not-too-distant future?

Chip maker VIA has introduced a new line of Nano processors. The VIA Nano E-Series chips are 64-bit x86 processors with support for hardware virtualization.

The E-Series chips are available with speeds ranging from 800MHz to to 1.8GHz. Theyr’e compatible with VIA’s media processors such as the VX800 and VX855 as well as upcoming VX900 and VN1000 digital media chips with support for HD video playback and 3D graphics.

The key selling point for these processors is their low power consumption. At idle, all the chips except for the 1.8GHz L3050 consume just 100mW of power. The Nano E-Series chips are compatible with motherboards designed for VIA C7, VIA Eden, and VIA Nano processors, so it might not be too long before we start to see netbooks and nettops with these new chips.

While VIA’s Nano processors haven’t proved to be all that popular with Western PC makers to date, we have sees a fair number of VIA powered netbooks show up in China over the past few years.

But Adobe thought it found a way around this restriction. Flash CS5 included tools that would let developers write applications in Flash, and export them to an iPhone-friendly format. In other words, you write you app once, and not only is it available in Flash, but you hit the export button and it’s available as an iPhone app which you can submit to the App Store.

Unfortunately, Apple is now starting to ban all apps that were initially coded using an unsupported language from the App Store — which means that Flash-to-iPhone converter is pretty much useless.

And now Adobe has decided to give up on the idea. Adobe’s Mike Chambers says that while the converter will still be available in Flash CS5, the company will not spend any time updating it or supporting it in the future. He also suggests that Flash developers focus their efforts on other platforms including Google Android.

Chambers also takes a few swipes at Apple, suggesting that Apple’s message to developers is that even apps that have already been accepted into the App Store can be rejected at any time for any reason, and that Adobe has already demonstrated with Flash CS5 that the iPhone is perfectly capable of running Flash and Flash-based apps.

HP is working on a slate PC with an 8.9 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor. We’ve known that much for ages. What we haven’t really known is how the Windows 7 tablet will stack up against the competition, because all we’ve seen to date is the information HP wants us to see. But the folks at Conecti.ca got their hands on a real, pre-production model and the verdict is… that it’s alright, but nothing too special.

I have to say, I’m disappointed but not surprised. I’ve spent some time with a number of convertible tablets with Intel Atom processors and various versions of Windows, and they tend to suffer from a couple of problems. The operating system just isn’t that easy to navigate using touch-only controls — even with Windows 7 Home Premium’s advanced multitouch gesture support. And they tend to feel sluggish when performing some tasks, such as auto-rotating the display. I suspect this is at least partially due to the low power processor.

HP tries to deal with at least the software problem by bundling the HP Slate with a custom touch-friendly user interface that you can use to launch programs and perform other tasks without looking at the default Windows 7 user interface. The tablet also has a Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator to help with high definition video playback. But Conecti.ca reports that the 1GB of RAM isn’t upgradeable,  which means there’ s no easy way to boost performance.

Unlike the Apple iPad, the HP Slate can run pretty much anything you can run on Window 7 — including Adobe Flash. But as Conecti.ca points out, that also means it takes a minute or so to boot the operating system (although you can probably deal with that by putting the computer to sleep instead of shutting it down when you’re not using it).

Still, if you’re looking for an alternative to the iPad that has expansion ports, a built in camera, HD video playback and an HDMI output, the HP Slate is sitll likely to be your best bet.

There’s still no word on the release date, but HP is expected to charge $549 for a 32GB model and $599 for a 64GB model

Last time I heard the name Airis, it was because the company was behind a 7 inch netbook for the European market. Now it looks like the company is branching out into… 7 inch tablets.

The Airis iTab7 sports a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel touchscreen display and an 800MHz ARM-based processor. It runs Windows CE 6.0 and has 802.11b/g WiFi and optional 3G and GPS capabilities.

The tablet has just 512MB of RAM and 2GB of storage, but there’s an SD card slot for adding extra space. The iTab7 can handle a wide variety of audio and video formats, which gives it potential as a portable media player. But the 3 hour battery means you’ll have a hard time watching two consecutive movies on an airplane without an external battery pack.

The tablet sells for 179 Euros, or about $243 US
